All Star Break

Technically, there’s a handful more games before the break, but after finishing game 81 and reaching the halfway point, wanted to do a quick recap and real life comparison. Some highlights:

  • We’re 9 games above reality in the standings.
  • While not in the same game, find it funny that Mitch Williams has a hit in his only at bat, same as he did in ’93.
  • Kruk is leading the team hitting at .352, around 35 points higher than expected. He’s also only 2 homeruns shy of matching his season total of 14.
  • Daulton is around 50 points above his average with 17 homeruns, just 7 shy of his season total.
  • While Eisenreich’s average is as expected, he’s also outpacing his power with 7 homeruns currently, already matching his season total. Noticing a trend here.
  • Thompson’s been a big disappointment hitting only .223. I dropped him in the order to 8th and been putting Incaviglia in his place against some righties. He’s the only hitter that’s severely underperforming. Hollins was early on but has rounded into form. Makes me worry I’m due for some major slumps in the second half.
  • Hell, even Jeltz is hitting well. Already has 4 homeruns (matching his ’89 season) and hitting 40 points higher.
  • I’m more aggressive with stealing and don’t usually care what the score is, so those numbers are a little higher too, though aside from Dykstra, this team wasn’t blessed with too much speed. Looking forward to my next project using the 1990 season and forming a super steal team. Stay tuned.
  • Starting pitching’s been about as expected with Greene (13-1 | 1.61 | 7 CG | 4 SO), Schilling (8-2 | 2.40 | 3 CG | 1 SO), and Mulholland (11-1 | 2.82 | 7 CG | 2 SO) leading the way, but exceeding expectations.
  • However, the bullpen has been ass with most ERAs over 4. Mitch has 23 saves, a little over half of his season total. Only 3 blown, though it sure felt like more. His WHIP is 2.107, which sure ain’t pretty.

July 3rd vs Padres

We did most of our damage in the second, starting with three back-to-back doubles, then a pair of singles, and finally a two run homer by Kruk (who was a triple shy of the cycle). That chased Harris from the game, and aside form a slight hiccup in the third with a two base error by Dykstra, Mulholland cruised through the rest of the game.

July 2nd vs Padres (Game 2)

Apparently this was Billy Bean Day. Dude hit five homeruns all season, but had three in this game! Anytime we got close, they’d tack on another un and keep this game out of reach. Blah, this game just sucked. The dice hated me.

July 2nd vs Padres (Game 1)

Back in 1993 this was a wild night. It was a double header that had a long rain delay thrown in for good measure. They were letting in people for free for the second game since it started at 1:30 AM! But thankfully, there’s no rain in my dining room so game one was very smooth. Jackson almost went the distance, but loaded up the bases in the ninth. Mitch came in and got a double play to ensure a shutout and the save. All of the offense came off of homeruns. Eisenreich had a two run blast in the first, quickly followed by a solo shot by Daulton. In the eighth Thompson added a two run homer for some extra insurance.

July 1st @ Cardinals

Completely blew this game, losing the series three games to one. Cards jumped out to a one run lead with a solo shot by Jefferies, but Schilling shut them down after that until he got into a little trouble in the seventh and had to give way to Andersen who got us out of the inning. Meanwhile, the Cardinals defense imploded and helped give up four runs, including a three run shot by Dykstra. However, Andersen couldn’t hold it, giving up three in the eighth. That brought out Lee Smith for another save.

June 30th @ Cardinals

Broke the two game skid. Brought out the cheese lineup to face the lefty and started with a triple that we easily got home. But the Cards did the same, so we were tied at one apiece for a few innings until Chamberlain rocked a two out solo shot. That’s all we’d wind up needing, as Greene had only given up one run through eight. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to complete it. We had bases loaded and had to pinch hit to get some insurance. Turned out to be a waste, but the next two hitters expanded our lead to five making the bottom of the ninth a lot less stressful.

June 29th @ Cardinals

Apparently scoring four runs in the first inning is a bad thing. Second game in a row we did that and second game our pitchers got annihilated. Our first six batters reached base, including a three run homer by Daulton. Milt Thompson, who’s been a sever disappointment so far, ended it with a double play, but four runs is a good start, right? The Cards chipped away with a couple runs, but in the fourth they exploded, Rivera gave up a double then three walks. Clinging to a one run lead he gives up a grand slam to Gilkey. We trade runs in the sixth, but in the eighth we have a great chance to come back. bases loaded for Inky, he rolls a homerun split, but lands on a double. Fine two runs score and a chance for a third, but Morandini is thrown out at home. Down one we have one more chance, but oh wait, Andersen came in and gave up four more runs. So yeah, that sucked.

June 28th @ Cardinals

So much for the winning streak, it ends at fourteen. Started off well and looked like we might cruise again. Had a four run first thanks to a three run homer by Inky and a solo shot by Pratt. But in the third Mulholland imploded. The Cards batted around and put up five. In the next inning Andersen came on and poured gasoline on the fire, giving up two more and a third a couple innings later. We managed to scratch back to get within two but Lee Smith closed the door on us and got the save. I’m thinking giving up sixteen hits is not conducive to winning.

June 27th @ Pirates

For the third time in this series we’re facing a left hander, so went with the cheese lineup again. Must have worked since we had eighteen hits! Wouldn’t you know it, first at bat Inky hits a triple, knocking in a run. He’d hit a two run homer a few innings later, but no other hits for him. Amaro had a one run shot and Pratt a two run dinger. Jackson was mowing them down until he melted down in the seventh. He became “weak” but with two outs and a huge lead was hoping he could record one more out. Oops, three run homer. Mason came in, ended the inning and went the rest of the way to secure the win.

June 26th @ Pirates

Another easy victory. Both Inky (a triple shy of the cycle) and Chamberlain had two run homers and three RBIs. Schilling was cruising, going eight and a third, striking out ten, but in the ninth he gave up a lead off triple and a couple more hits, losing his shutout and the ball, giving way to the bullpen. Mike Williams allowed another run and loaded the bases, setting up the easiest save possibility in baseball. Naturally I had to take advantage of it and Mitch got a one out save.
