July 17th @ Padres

Whelp, the bullpen got involved and blew this game. Maybe some questionable decisions by me on this one. Schilling pitched a gem, had a 2-1 lead through seven, but in the eighth had a chance to get some insurance runs so pinch hit for him. Didn’t work out, so West came in and promptly blew the lead. Swapped him for Andersen. Went to the tenth and suddenly had men on the corners and one out with Gwynn up. Brought everyone in and got a groundout. One out away with first base open, gave a pass to Plantier to face the pitcher, knowing they’d pinch hit but I wanted Martinez out of there. Unfortunately, they pinch hit with McGriff and he hit a weak single just past Morandini for the walk off win. Blah

July 16th @ Padres

Another easy victory and the bullpen is getting bored. Mulholland took a shutout into the 9th, but gave up a lead off homer to Phil Clark then retired the side to secure our 69th (nice!) win. Both Daulton and Dykstra hit homers for the Phils.

July 15th @ Padres

Starting the second half of the season on a west coast road trip and with a win. Eisenreich was the big hero, going four for five, knocking in four runs, and was a double away from the cycle. Greene was solid enough, going the distance.

All-Star Break

Going into the All-Star break and trying to see who may have made the team. In reality the Phillies were well represented. Mulholland, Daulton, and Kruk started while Hollins was a reserve.

Since I can’t compare to other players in the league, I’ll just list a few that would be good considerations.

  • Kruk’s .358 and 15 homeruns at first base.
  • Daulton’s .303 and 20 homeruns at catcher.
  • Stocker’s .341 average is impressive, but guessing he’d be a reserve since he’s an unknown rookie.
  • Dykstra .300 with 10 homeruns and 30 stolen bases.
  • Eisenreich is hitting .327, but gotta think there would be better outfielders to choose from.
  • The bullpen is ass despite Mitch having 26 saves, but we have four starting pitchers with 10+ wins. Only three would be considered.
  • Greene 14-2, 2.09 ERA ,122 K’s, 0.928 WHIP. Guessing he’d be the starter.
  • Mulholland 12-1, 2.71 ERA, 1.025 WHIP.
  • Schilling 10-2, 2.58 ERA, 101 K’s.

I already have my rotation set for the entire season, but thinking I might reset slightly based on the results. Currently we’re Mulholland, Greene, Schilling, Jackson, Rivera and using any off days to get the top of the rotation more appearances. Thinking I’ll swap Greene and Mulholland, the rest is performing as expected. Only 73 games left to play and we’re currently 10 games above the real ’93 Phils!

July 11th vs Giants

Thought I was in for another long game. Giants scored three in the first after Schilling couldn’t find the plate and walked three in a row. He settled down after that, only giving up a solo homer to Bonds (of course) later in the game. On offense I brought out the cheese lineup, hoping for a spark. Amaro led off with a triple, which we brought home and then nothing until the seventh inning. After a couple baserunners, Batiste came in to pinch hit and smashed a two run triple! That chased Hickerson for a right hander, so I countered by pinch hitting Dykstra and he crushed a two run homer to take the lead! West gave us a 1-2-3 eighth that led to Mitchy-poo in the ninth with a one run lead. Lead off single, then two outs and a double. Men on second and third with two outs. They pinch hit with Benzinger, Clark is on deck and is a much more favorable match-up for me odds wise, but I just can’t intentionally load the bases with Wild Thing on the mound, so I literally roll the dice and am rewarded with a ground out to send us into the all-star break as winner, splitting the series. In eight games against me Bonds has seven homeruns. Just ridiculous.

July 10th vs Giants

We just can’t keep up with their bats. It’s crazy that this team missed the playoffs that year. Bonds hit another pair of homeruns against us. Burkett was shutting us down, the one run we did score was without a hit. Finally in the seventh we got to him, but it was too little too late. Once we got within three Beck came in and slammed the door shut in our faces.

July 9th vs Giants

Rivera got roughed up and Bonds had to Bonds. He hit two home runs and they batted around in the fourth to force the bullpen to come out early. They did well, only giving up one run over the next five innings, but a ninth inning rally could only cut the lead in half before Beck came in to close it out and get the save.

July 8th vs Giants

Another complete win for us. Mulholland spread out seven hits and only gave up one run, going the distance, retiring the final nine batters he faced. The offense hit a ton, a three run blast from Daulton the biggest blow. Just a simple, easy victory.

July 7th vs Dodgers

Our bats came out to play today! We batted around in the second and eighth innings with homeruns by Daulton, Stocker, Dykstra, and Kruk. After whupping on Ramon Martinez, his brother Pedro came in and shut us down for awhile. Once he left we beat up the rest of their bullpen. Meanwhile, Jackson pitched a four hit, one run gem and went the distance in this laugher, completing the sweep of LA.

July 6th vs Dodgers

This was a wild one. Started off as a classic pitchers duel. Through six, we hadn’t gotten a guy to third base yet and they weren’t much better. Top of the seventh saw a single, steal, single to put up the first run of the game. Bottom of the inning led off with a two base error to Eric Davis. Two strikeouts later we rallied and scored three, mostly due to Morandini’s two run double. Put up two more in the eighth and needed every one of them. Top of the ninth Schilling couldn’t close it out and left the game with the bases load for *gulp* Wild Thing. Went pretty much as expected. Struck out the first batter, only needing one more, giving everyone false hope. Two walks and a passed ball later, sphincters are tightening again. Ground out to the shortstop mercifully ended the game for the win.
